Interestingly, I think children today know quite a lot of gruesome detail about what happened to pirates too. All the toy shops are full of pirate books and pirate games and not all of a silly/friendly sort (some are genuinely informative in a "horrible histories" kind of a way). It's one reason why I imagine modern children would still flock to an accessible dramatization or re-production of SA stories, without the need to radically change the story or the style.
