I think AR was right to stick to 'hard'. Like his sailing terms, it has a precise meaning, which I appreciated when I went to Pin Mill aged about eight. But it was a pity he didn't refer to 'flying boats', a few of which, incidentally, were in use as houseboats at Felixstoweferry after their war service until the 1953 floods.
