In SA Captain Flint's flag of a white elephant on a green background is seen on the houseboat by the Swallows, and Peggy tells them that it is Siamese.
It has only just occurred to me (thanks to a repeat of an episode of the BBC quiz show Pointless) that it is possible there is another origin.
In Denmark their oldest honour is the Order of the Elephant established in 1693. There is also the Elephant Gate, the entrance to the Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen built in 1901 (they also have a beer named Elephant.)
Checking online the Siamese flag has a red background, whereas green is widely used by Carlsberg in their branding.
So is the reference to Siam in SA just to mislead us?
