Funnily enough, when AR gave some advice to JRR Tolkien re: The Hobbit, Tolkien took on board all the advice given (even when you sense he didn't really want to). It's funny in a way that AR was so insecure about his work on one level and yet impervious to advice on another. "Folk generally what do" is another example. The publishers wanted to change it and AR was adamant that it was what he wanted to say and what a Lakeland charcoal burner would have said. I've never been quite sure about it and tend to imagine the line from the film now instead.
