You can no longer read Ransome's 'Lilliput Cricket' article from the Guardian (June 7th, 1930) for free online, but I have a copy stashed away. Here's a quote as he talks about a mean cricket master at school, thinking he was too scared to catch a ball:

"It had not then been discovered that without spectacles I was nearly blind."

The young Arthur must have sat in the front row for every lesson, otherwise they would soon have noticed he was unable to read the blackboard. Indeed, this was how the situation was eventually recognised; it is just strange that it took so long.
