Gold will also dissolve in a few other solvents. The easiest and safest for the amateur chemist to use is a potassium iodide solution in which iodine crystals have been dissolved. The compound formed, AuI (gold iodide), is soluble. It will take a little time, depending on how finely divided the gold is.
