That does sound very likely- it seems probable to me that AR knew the 'simple' version of gold dissolving, and knew that it would make a cracking story idea for children.
While I'm here, a question to people who seem to know what they're talking about on the mining front, and the commercial gold extraction using CN. Does the cyanide residue smell- specifically of almonds?
I once filmed Army Engineers in Ulster, feeding an endless sausage of plastic explosive entwined with detonator cord into a hole in the surface of a road, which was later blown into a nice impassable crater. I think the explosive was C4, which has CN groups in it, and the whole scene was bathed in a lovely smell of marzipan. Do gold mining tailings smell like that?
Sorry about the off topic, but I've often wondered about that.
