Luckily, what Dick dissolved was chalcopyrite, an iron/copper sulphide. He'd have a mix of iron and copper nitrates and sulphates, plus some surplus acid, not too harmful a solution. Once Captain Flint added ammonia there wouldn't be any acid left. By the way, adding ammonia to a copper sulphate solution does produce a startlingly beautiful blue. I first did this when I was ten, about the same time I first read PP.

I do wonder what disposing of this solution would have done to the bugs in Beckfoot's septic tank (if it had one). Perhaps grey water and chemical waste was piped straight into the Amazon.
