Normally at home, redundant chemical solutions were poured into the flower beds. My father banned pouring such waste into the vegetable garden, but he was an industrial chemist.
At school such solutions did go down a playground drain, if we had made something like nitrogen triodide we would stand round in a circle and apply some human watering to help it on its way.
