I wonder if Dick had a chemistry set? There is an interesting piece on this on the BBC website, which points out that chemistry sets issued in the 1920s and 1930s sometimes contained our old friend sodium cyanide. They were also known to contain uranium dust, potassium nitrate, lead acetate and sodium hydroxide. I wouldn’t fancy tipping that lot on the flower bed. Maybe that is why Dick and Capn Flint were unfazed about dealing with acids. People then seemed to have had a more robust attitude to chemicals.
