AR did travel to China, although maybe there were no dragon dances during the period he was there? Perhaps someone with a spare moment can look up his arrival/departure dates, and locations visited, to estimate what cultural events he witnessed.
I know he met Madame Sun Yat-sen and this made him dream up Missee Lee. But just think: this was a journalistic appointment, being sent to China. Would the book still have been written had he not gone?
What if the Manchester Guardian had needed a political correspondent to visit the Falkland Islands? Would AR have written a book about the S&As amongst the penguins instead?
