Dick definitely had a chemistry set. We probably all remember the event described by Dorothea when Dick stumbled in to Mr Jenkins bedroom with part of his apparatus and left a strong smell of hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs).
Not sure that I would worry about dumping any of the chemicals mentioned onto the flower beds in chemistry set quantities. Even the uranium dust is probably not a radioactive the old Camping Gaz mantles from one of their lanterns. Sodium hydroxide is still used as a drain cleaner (and works very well on cleaning glass also).
