Apart from currency value tables, which as you say have problems and need interpretation, I try to think of the comparison with wages of the time. So from my childhood in '48 I remember (accurate or not) being told that a bus driver earned £4 a week, and that at £1000 a year, you had entered the middle classes.
I find these numbers give the best idea of the real cost of things.
