Whilst your books may all have been purchased around 1948, it may depend on when they were printed.

I don't really know when the books were purchased, but I'm going by the impression dates, and they say 1948.
I do have a war time book- a 1941 Gollancz printing of "Post D". It was one of their 'yellow wrapper' cheap editions and war time standards are evident throughout; the wrapper has disintegrated, although I've kept it folded into the back pages because it's interesting in itself. The boards and spine are blue, still, probably because the wrapper did last until a few years ago. The paper itself is turning brown throughout and is giving advance signs or turning into a variety of sand... Clearly had lot of acid left in it.
Vint Cerf has been warning of the fragility of digital information and the danger of losing all of it for posterity, but in this case paper looks as though it may disappear first...
One of the reasons it's in this state is that I re-read it quite often. "Post D" is superbly, sparely written by John Strachey; his non-style gives the same pleasure as AR's, and the stories, accounts of working as an air raid warden in 'Slaney' (Chelsea/Battersea), are matter of fact, apparently true to life, and fascinating. If anybody can find a copy, grab it...
