Google Books reveals that W.G. Collingwood, The Skald, uses the term "coppermines valley" (no capital) in his book The Book of Coniston, published in 1897.

Other early 19th century quotes refer to "copper mines" and copper-mines" in the valley but not to a location called "Coppermines Valley".

It looks as though the name arose quite recently but the knowledge of copper mining goes back centuries.
