The loss of the stars over population centres is very sad, but there are places, not least the Norfolk Broads themselves, where they are still brightly visible. And overflying Central Asia by night a few years ago I was struck by the total absence of lighting on the ground. Fortunately there are still millions of people who can see the stars; sadly, many of them may not have read AR!

If they have, they will not only have learned morse and semaphore but will also know how to sail a boat, even in the absence of the necessary facilities.
