Back in the good old days, thousands of boats were named after birds. It was very common.
In the anecdote about purchasing two dinghies with Dr Altounyan, Ransome says that one was named Swallow after an earlier Swallow, presumably a boat at Lanehead. (So that older boat would maybe pre-date the Admiralty pinnace anyway.)
