"Tom Brown at Oxford" by Thomas Hughes is a sequel to the better-known "Tom Brown's School Days". The latter was set at Rugby in the 1830s, a school which AR also attended, though 60+ years later.
Jim Brading, as we all remember, managed to go from Rugby to Oxford on a scholarship. So we can see Ransome was not bitter about his own failing in that matter (???!).
I recommend you read "Tom Brown's School Days" because:
* Part 1 chapter 9 contains the lyrics of "a favourite School-house song" which end "For it is my delight of a likely night, In the season of the year." [See Winter Holiday].
* Part 2 chapter 3 mentions "stinks" [see Pigeon Post].
* Part 2 chapter 6 sees the main character use the phrase "as sure as eggs is eggs" [used in 4 of the 13 books].
* Unlike other 'classics' it is actually good.
