Arthur Ransome was taught to ice skate by the Russian Prince Kropotkin, who had popped to Leeds for some reason. That seems crazy enough...but this week I learned of another prince the family knew.
Apparently, Cyril Ransome tutored the Ethiopian Prince Alemayehu at Rugby school. Later, around age 18, the prince returned to Leeds to stay with the Ransomes and died of pleurisy soon after.
I discovered all this after noticing my daughter reading the 2012 children's book "The Prince Who Walked With Lions" by Elizabeth Laird. It covers the prince's childhood in Abyssinia, his father's lost battle against the English, and a short bit about life at Rubgy. (No mention is made of Cyril.)
Any advance on two (princes) ???!!!
