I'm always intrigued that AR referred to Kropotkin as "Prince Kropotkin" - it would be a bit like insisting on referring to Tony Benn as Lord Stansgate! Kropotkin - an anarchist who was in the UK as essentially an exile when he stayed with the Ransomes - dropped the "Prince" when he was 12 and rebuked friends who used the title.
Although Kropotkin did return to Russia in 1917 he was hostile to the Revolution, and I do wonder whether Bolshevik critics chose to revive the "Prince" and it stuck?
