In last Saturday's edition of the Guardian literary celebrities were asked about their childhood reading. I'm glad to say that one of them mentioned AR - the playwright Tom Stoppard, who disclosed that the first 'real' book he read was 'Peter Duck'. He says that he was surprised to discover that such an intimidating object could turn out to be gripping stuff. He then started looking for the other books.
