I'm re-reading Pigeon Post and got to studying the drawing of Dick's bell ringing mechanism. The whole thing is, of course, ingenious, however I'm wondering if AR might have made an error in the drawing... To my eyes it looks like the 'hook' bend of the darning needle is facing the wrong way and would only succeed in hooking the cross wire when the 'gate' is closed, not when it is opened. Of course it could be that the bend is not a hook at all, but actually a surface for the gate to push on when it opens. However, the second picture with the gate being opened appears to show the bend in the needle behind the cross wire...
All very nit-picky of course. But then again this IS Tarboard... ;-)
