My 11 year old daughter has had Arthur Ransome read to her a couple of years ago (I wanted to explain some of the old references) and she now thinks that they are boring because "nothing happens". Unlike the RL Stein type books, the number of "jolts" per page is lowish. She is intelligent and a good reader but she does seem to like books with action. I am now wondering whether I should read Ransome just yet to our younger children. Perhaps you need to be a bit older than eight or nine?
