Many thanks, Magnus and Roger - I thought the use of 'Susie' would probably be stress-related . . . and of course it was said in Susan's absence. The phrase 'poor old Susie' reminds of the famous phrase used by John to Susan when she starts being sea-sick in WD: "Poor old chap". I wonder what the Guardian journalists of today would make of that?
