I am currently re-reading PP (the Puffin 1986 edition, cover is a colour painting by Anthony Kerins.) I’ve noticed, and no doubt not the first to have done so, that the endpaper map has had the labels of place names etc re-written.

Also the ‘Sketch Map Of High Tops’ has had some extra bits drawn in around Atkinson’s Farm. The most surprising thing about it is that the name of Kanchenjunga on the top right of the map has been re-written as ‘Kachen Junor’!

Checking my copy of the previous Puffin edition (1974, cover is a coloured version of an AR illustration) has the same map. My 2004 hardback edition has the original map the same as my 1953 hardback, also the first Red Fox paperback edition reverted to the original map.

Does anyone know who made the changes, and why did Puffin go on for so long using the incorrect one?
