I agree Ed, our imaginations are the best source of how we 'see' characters in novels. The 1974 film was a good attempt, but had some failings.
To rename characters and make major additions to the plot (despite there credible sources) changes the nature of the book to make what they hope will be a successful film, so it ceases to be a film of the book. If this is the approach then give the resulting film a completely new name.
(As Ed points out John has a particular slang meaning in his part of the world, but here - the UK - it has a further slang meaning:- a client of a prostitute.)
