...when I first heard of this film, a couple of years ago, I shuddered. It cannot be what *I* want it to be: a faithful retelling of the book, fitting my personal vision of the people and events. The '74 version was, at times, close: but also everso wrong - not least because I was eleven at the time and, naturally, should have been cast as John. ;-)
The more I hear - Uncle Jim a spy, possible links to Russia - the more I find it an intriguing retelling of the story, perhaps more autobiographical, perhaps the childrens' elements a meta story riding on 'real' events: the Walkers and Blacketts saving Uncle Jim in more ways than one. It might, if the three-film rumour is true, just work.
It will, whatever we think, raise awareness of the works of the twentieth century's best children's writer. Which can't be a bad thing.
