The crossed flags used at the start of each of the 12 books are triangular (with "S&A for ever!" under them).
However, the odd illustration shows what appears to be a square flag. S&A has "The start of the voyage" where the flag looks square (though it is hard to see) but "Roger on guard" is definitely triangular.
If AR was following the 'rules', he'd use triangular flags for cruising, as square burgees indicate a craft is racing. I forget which year those rules were made.
Has anyone got a diagram showing how the toggle etc fitted onto the wooden flagstaff? Without a stick to raise the flag up, it would have been obscured by the mast top often.
