Going Away to School

I always accepted that The Swallows and I think the D's go to schools away from home but I always though the Amazons went to a local school and stayed at home. Reading Picts and Martyrs I noted that Mrs Blackett went to visit Nancy and Peggy at their school prior to going on her Baltic holiday.

Any thoughts on school systems then? Did anyone live at home and walk to school?
