I think AR took it for granted in WH and the mumps quarantine business that his readers would expect the Amazons to go to boarding school, to be turned into young ladies. On reflection, it's a miracle that Nancy wasn't expelled.
The Swallows and the Ds had peripatetic parents (the sea and archaeological digs) who would have packed their offspring off to board as a matter of course, the Swallows with financial support from the Navy; and in BS Port and Starboard were away at finishing school. I am sure Tom Dudgeon boarded, but the Death and Glories would have gone,to the local "council" school, like the vast majority of the school age population.
Apart from Joe, Bill and Pete, AR's principal characters are middle class, and he was writing for the middle class, many of whom sent their offspring to boarding school if they could afford it.
