Coming a bit late to this discussion, I am looking at Rough Map with Bearings (p.75 Cape edition). My 6th impression is reasonably clear, and there definitely look to be two lines marked 'SW x W'. Of the various lines radiating from the central point (the kraal), they are the top two of the right-hand group.
The 'x' on each line is a bit of a blob, but quite clear under a magnifying glass. I can imagine they might have become fuzzier in later reprints, but by no stretch could they be '3/4'.
