I suggest that it would be quite possible.
The 32 cardinal points are 360/32 degrees apart = 11.25 degrees.
So SW and WSW differ by 22.5 degrees, with SW by W being the mid. This gives a range of 11.25 degrees when SW by W would have been the most accurate bearing, So John's 8 degrees falls within this limit.
