As one who did some plane tabling in the dim and distant past, I can tell you that if you get right around a circuit without an error -- a plus-or-minus left over at the end -- you fluked it. There's always a smallish error, and the correction procedure is to divide the error into the number of segments, and then distribute it around between each segment. If John got right round the Island with a error of 8° he was doing quite well.
