The 1947 first edition of GN had Peggy in the picture, and Roger (and others) say it was 'later' corrected to Dot. Since Peter C's 1948 copy has Dot, clearly the error was picked up quickly. Another error, with the planks in the roof of Jemmerling's cabin going the wrong way, was picked up in the proof stage.
One thought about the quality of GN's pictures. I expect many Tarboarders were born too late to have first editions, and in the wartime and post-war reprints, the plates had got worn down by reuse. Austerity meant they couldn't be replaced by new ones, so the pictures got fuzzier.
