There is a well known phenomenon called fan fiction. People write variations of well known books and stories with their own twists and plot changes. There is some Arthur Ransome fan fiction out there but There is a lot more Harry potter, Dr Who and Jane Austen variations.
Sometimes fan fic suthors just retell the story from a different pont of view (Captain Flnt for example) and sometimes they change the story by adding events or changing the plot development.
I see all the film adaptions as just an expensively produced fan fiction. Even the 1974 film was not an exact version of the book, lots of stuff had to be left out and/or somewhat changed. This version seems to be a more loosely adapted version of the original with a lot of plot elements introduced and a lot of the original changed or left out completely.
The only way to survive is to look on it as a homage to Ransome and not a faithful version of his story. I doubt it will have much of a showing here in North America so I probably will only see it after it comes out on DVD or Netflix, if I decide to see it at all.
