The thing is that most ‘fan fiction’ just uses the existing characters and puts them in to new adventures, or other times; speculating how their lives might have been when they were older. Some take plot aspects of the existing books that AR only gives passing reference to and then wonders what happened ‘away’ from the book. Seriously considered ‘fan fiction’ does not try to re-write the original books.

The 1974 film is a reasonably faithful adaptation of the book, of course changes had to be made to fit in with time and budget constraints, and this is only to be expected. The film currently in production, from the little information we have, seems to be adding plot and character from other sources (such as Ronald Chambers book on the possibility that AR was a ‘spy’.) One aspect of the ‘twelve’ is that they build on each previous one (we have to be forgiving with PD which should have course been published before SD,) there are many back references that gave insight in to earlier books. Yet it seems that the current screen writer(s) are taking elements from later books in an adaptation of the first!

I do realise that there is much speculation in all this, but given the scan information we have been given already the prospects for the finished film do not look good.

If the producers want to make a ‘homage’ to AR then do so, make a biographical film that concentrates on his writing of the ‘twelve’ and how parts of his life influenced this. Don’t take one of the books and try to stuff everything in with no appreciation or respect for the original plot.
