One of my other literary fiction interests are the works of Patrick O'Brian. A film set in the world of O'Brian was made a few years ago "Master and Commander:The Far Side of the World". It was very authentic looking with a lot of effort to get the period detail right and was a visual delight, but the plot was a real mish-mash. Although based very loosely on one of the books, incidents and quotes were taken from a number of the books and the plot was changed significantly with whole chunks of material invented for the film. The actors were also a mish-mash. Some were pretty well as described in the books others were completely different.
All in all, it was not a film version of an O'Brian book but was a mostly enjoyable pastiche of one. I hope that the new S&A film will be somewhat similar. I hold out no hope for a faithful retelling of the story, that has basically already been done in 1974 to large degree.
