Usually films depart massively from the original book. One I quote particularly is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It's an excellent film, but apart from the mainspring of the plot - British pensioners retiring to live more cheaply in India - it has almost nothing in common. For a start, the book is set in Bangalore, but the film is in Jaipur, more photogenic. The book, These Foolish Things was reissued under the film name to tie in with it.
The Harry Potter series is a rare example of fidelity to the books. But it was more than the film makers' lives were worth to deviate, given the vast fanatical audience they would have offended.
Quite often, the makers want to follow the book, but the financiers say there is more money in tailoring it to a certain audience, so everything changes in pre-production.
Going back to the new SA film, there is to be a session on it at next month's TARS Literary Weekend, led by the Literary Executors. That should shed a lot of light.
