Perhaps it is because The Hobbit is a complete and pure fantasy so changes don't matter so much whereas the S&A books have always had that appeal of realism and by adding in spies and other more fantastic elements it spoils that. After all Peter Duck and Missee Lee, the least realistic of Ransome's books are also the ones that most people like the least.
