I agree with all you say, Ed, and it also occurs to to me that leaving aside PD and ML the physical dangers in the novels (night sailing, shipwreck of the Swallow, the blizzard, the fell fire) build to a climax in WDMTGTS and then tail off. Crossing the North Sea is like act III of a classical drama which then unwinds to its denouement in GN.
Not that the increasingly author would have seen it like that at the time!
