Earlier this year All Things Ransome received permission to post a reply card from Arthur Ransome received in 1939 by a long-time fan. The page can be found at http://allthingsransome.net/connections/dobinson.html.
The reply is interesting in the explicit confirmation of Wild Cat Island as being a combination of Peel Island and a Windermere island; of the Old Man being Kanchunjunga; and especially the last two sentences where AR says "I am not sure if the shelter is still at the head of Windermere. It used to be."
This was presumably in response to a question in the original letter but AR doesn't indicate; nor do we have a copy of the original letter. It seems possible AR is referring to the model for the North Pole. Other possibilities?
