Don't you think Arthur's illustrations are just perfect for the job they do? If they'd been done by a slick artist, they wouldn't have been half so good. As a nipper I imagined the drawings were rattled off by the kids in cabin lantern-light during the course of their adventures.
Thank goodness the characters' faces are left to our imagination: filmed versions of favourite books are often, to me, a let-down, as the characters' mugs don't match up to my established mental pictures of them (though Henry Dimbleby did made a good Tom Dudgeon in the eighties' S&A Forever on BBC). We all make these wonderful mind-pictures, I suppose — even of the people on Tarboard. I always imagine Peter H, for instance, as a smart sailing-club commodore, and Mike Field as rather like Crocodile Dundee. Tee, hee! Am I close to the truth?!?!
Incidentally, Peter, Tarboard is refreshing. It cheers me up no end.
Joke to cheer up Tarboarders on a cold January day....
