Im not a great expert, but I believe cookies are pieces of information placed in your machine by sites you have visited to enable them to operate efficiently ( and possibly do more sinister things). Most have expiry dates and delete themselves. They can be deleted, but will reload when you revisit a sending site. You can set up your machine to warn you when cookies are being sent, but its a pain!
I delete mine about once a month.
