The depressing bank of gravel which spoils
some of the Coniston shores in the summer is
just visible in your picture.
I seem to recall that Christina Hardyment
writes somewhere that the Crake was dredged
in order to drop Coniston's water level. I
wonder if this was her understanding of the
removal of the dam, or a separate episode.
The opposition of the farming community that
you write about explains a lot. It is also
not unlike the hostility which is first
generated by attempts to restore railways
or canals. Usually after a time common sense
prevails and a compromise is hammered out.
Do you think the Coniston Water Association's
project could be resurrected? Could a removable
wooden dam under a management scheme acceptable
to 'both sides' be a possible compromise?
