Not 3p, 3d! That's about 1.25p in the new money.
I have been asking around about the price of petrol in the 30s, and my mature friends think it may have been about 1/- (one shilling = 5p) a gallon. I do remember that when we converted to the new money in 1971, 4-star petrol cost 6/8d - the famous solicitor's fee.
And I have just paid a solicitor's bill for legal advice for TARS which was nearly £100 - and he gave us a good rate as an AR enthusiast.
