Cars and their equipment last a lot longer nowadays than they did in the "good old days" when things were built "properly". For example my father tells me that a long drive without some sort of mechanical breakdown or flat tyre would be quite unusual. "Old" cars in the 1920s were probably only about seven or eight years old.
