In order to keep in touch with the UK, I subscribe to the news digest magazine, The Week. In the 30 March issue is an obituary of Harry Wingfield, the designer of the Ladybird books, including the famous Peter and Jane. In the obituary is the following statement:
“Today, the books are criticized for portraying a privileged white middle class. But in their time, they were a radical departure from the casual elitism found in such children’s favourites as Swallows and Amazons”.
Any thoughts about what is meant by “casual elitism”? Might it not be a better sin (if a sin at all) than self-conscious class obsession?
