See also the movie SA. There are many shots of the boats sailing (the director or sailing advisor certainly liked the look of a small boat gybing). The halliard is attached to the yard about a quarter way from the throat to the peak of the sail, with no other means of attachment to the mast.
No shots of the reefed sail, unfortunately. On my _Halcyon_ I reinforce the jiffy reefing with an extra tyer, and the same could be done just above the loose yard.
As far as a traveller is concerned, the original Stephens-designed Lightnings (circa 1940's to '60's) had none. They didn't point quite as well, but outside of the racing fraternity/sorority this shouldn't be of great concern.
I might mention that raising the yard until the halliard is chock-ablock seems to serve the boats in the movie well enough.
