It's a whole fascinating subject, Ed, this variation in spelling, etc. I was reading a book produced in New York in 1943 about how to build wooden ships, eg. minesweepers. All the spelling, I noticed, was in English, eg. colour, harbour, etc. Does this mean that the "new" spelling arose since that time? This is the development of living language in action "as we speak". I note with dismay that the "new" spelling is becoming more prevalent here in Australia, even to the point where it is promoted by primary schools. Then, of course there is the problem of "Advertisement Spelling", which promotes such travesties as "rite" and "nite". No wonder our youngsters have trouble with their spelling! Perhaps it's a good job that old curmudgeons like me have a "use-by date"!
