When a sail (a jib) is attached (tacked) to the end of the bowsprit and to a point somewhere on the mast, wind creates tension along the forward edge (luff) of the sail. This tension will tend to lift the bowsprit. The bobstay is there to help to hold the bowsprit down. Now why there were ever booms on jibs is a bit of a mystery to me.
